My Approach

Supporting you through grief and loss

In my approach you are the expert on you.   My role as counsellor is to offer you support, insight, guidance and coping strategies.  I listen carefully to what you say and don’t say.  I hear what you may not.  I observe and interpret your verbal and nonverbal communication.  Perhaps, most importantly, I meet you where you are emotionally.   No assumptions, judgment or expectations.  Just be you.

In my counselling practice, I draw upon a number of modalities, always taking into consideration what will be most effective and appropriate in the moment.  Below is an outline of the therapeutic approaches I employ most often.  Each of them can be helpful in dealing with symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress, intrusive thoughts and physical complaints to name a few.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT):

Focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful patterns of thought and perception. Explores how our cognitions can have a negative influence on behaviour and emotion.

Insight Oriented Therapy:

The development of self awareness and understanding of how significant influences from the past affect the present.

Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT):

Through the exploration of dysfunctional emotional patterns in relationships, the goal of EFT is to improve communication, trust, attachment and bonding.

Mindfulness Practice:

A popular technique of focusing one’s awareness of feelings, thoughts and bodily sensations in the present moment. Often used to decrease stress, improve concentration and promote self awareness.
